Nicaragua is a volcanic country. We visited two very different volcanoes - Volcán Masaya and Volcán Mombacho.

Volcán Masaya was described by the conquering Spaniards as the Gates of Hell and the road to the top of the caldera is very accessible. We spent a lovely sunset enjoying the views, the mystique, and the changing light.

Volcán Mombacho is very unique in that it's caldera has collapsed, the steep sides are now the site of coffee trees, and the road to the top is an adventure in itself. I was rewarded by the beauty of the cloud forest as we ascended and then hiked around the crater.
